Description

HERRINGS is a house located in South Pool Village, originally built in the 17th century but heavily remodeled in the late 18th century and extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure features rendered rubble and cob walls, topped with a hipped tiled roof. There are rendered brick axial stacks, one at the left-hand end and another lateral stack at the rear with a brick shaft.

The house has a three-room plan that may have started as a three-room-and-through-passage layout, although a stair hall now separates the central and left-hand rooms. The central room contains a 17th-century stack at its inner end, while a narrow room beyond is now self-contained. A rear outshut likely dates from the 18th century, coinciding with the house's general remodeling. Additionally, there is a one-room 19th-century addition set back from the left-hand end, which was reputedly a cottage.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front featuring late 18th-century and late 20th-century horizontal sliding sashes, one of which is divided into three sections. The ground floor has two small-paned 20th-century casements, and to the left of center is a late 18th-century or early 19th-century six-panel door. There is also a C20 glazed door inserted into the right-hand end room. The small hipped roof wing, formerly a cottage, has a small-paned two-light 19th-century casement on the first floor and a plank door below.

Inside, the only surviving feature from the 17th century is the fireplace in the central room, which has a massive chamfered slate slab lintel. The rest of the joinery is mainly from the 18th century, including two-panel doors and panelled shutters.
