Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was formerly a rectory, dating back to 1828 according to documentary evidence. It features stucco joint-lined stone walls and a shallow pitched hipped roof with overhanging eaves. There are brick axial stacks and a rendered brick stack at the left-hand end. The building has a double depth plan that is two rooms wide but not quite symmetrical. The two main rooms are located on the right-hand side at the front and back, while the kitchen is situated at the rear on the left-hand side. The front door leads into an entrance hall that originally occupied the entire front side of the house, although it has since been partitioned off. Behind the entrance hall is a stair hall. A small service wing, set back from the left-hand end of the house, contains a dairy, pantry, and other utility spaces.

The exterior is two storeys high with a nearly symmetrical two-window front, although the right-hand window on the first floor is blind. The original or slightly later 19th-century marginal-paned sash windows are very large on the ground floor and feature short horns. To the left of centre is an original six-panelled door set in a round-headed opening with a semi-circular fanlight above. The right end of the house has a symmetrical three-window garden front with identical windows. The small lower service wing at the left-hand end includes an eight-pane 19th-century sash window on the first floor and a later 19th-century lean-to in front.

Inside, the house features panelled shutters and six-panelled doors. The two principal rooms have original marble chimneypieces with roundels in the corners. The open well staircase has a cut string, carved tread ends, stick balusters, and column newels.
