Description

Ackmans is a cottage likely dating from the later 17th century, with an 18th-century addition. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a thatched roof, gabled at the left end and hipped to the right. A rubble stack with a brick shaft is located at the left gable end, and another stack is present at the rear of the 18th-century addition. The cottage originally comprised two rooms, with the left-hand room being the only heated one. Behind this is an outshut, originally an 18th-century addition, also with a fireplace. The front elevation has a regular arrangement of probably 19th-century casement windows, mostly of two and three lights with small panes. A central 20th-century stable-type door provides access. An outshut is situated behind the left-hand end of the cottage, featuring a large rubble stack. The interior was inaccessible during the survey, but may contain original features such as cross beams and fireplaces.
