Description

SOUTH HUISH GALMPTON SX 64 SE 4/90 Townsend

II

House, formerly farmhouse. Apparently mid C17 but may have earlier origins. Plastered rubble and cob walls. Thatch roof gabled to left end, hipped to right. Brick stack at gable end and rear lateral rubble stack with brick shaft. Play: at present 3-room plan with largest room to right, cross passage to its left with small central room beyond it, which has an axial passage behind it leading to the left-hand room. The axial passage may be a C20 insertion but opening onto it is an original winder staircase in a shallow projection. C19 outshut added behind right-hand room. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front of C20 small-paned 1 and 2- light casements. C20 4-panel door at centre under slate pentice. Rear elevation has out shut to left and small rectangular stair projection slightly to right of centre. Interior: right-hand room has chamfered and step-stopped ceiling beams. The ceiling level drops close to the partition wall in a way which resembles an internal jetty and apparently also has a partition over it, but the roof structure dates only from the C18 over this end, and so provides no corroborating evidence.
