Description

Townsend is a house, formerly a farmhouse, that likely dates from the mid-17th century but may have earlier origins. It features plastered rubble and cob walls, with a thatched roof that has a gable at the left end and is hipped on the right. There is a brick stack at the gable end and a rear lateral rubble stack with a brick shaft. The current layout consists of a three-room plan, with the largest room on the right, a cross passage to its left, and a small central room beyond that, which has an axial passage leading to the left-hand room. The axial passage may have been added in the 20th century, but there is an original winder staircase in a shallow projection opening onto it. An outshut from the 19th century has been added behind the right-hand room.

The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical front that has three windows featuring 20th-century small-paned one and two-light casements. There is a 20th-century four-panel door at the centre, sheltered by a slate pentice. The rear elevation includes an outshut to the left and a small rectangular stair projection slightly to the right of centre. Inside, the right-hand room has chamfered and step-stopped ceiling beams. The ceiling level drops near the partition wall, resembling an internal jetty, and there appears to be a partition above it. However, the roof structure over this end dates only from the 18th century, providing no supporting evidence for the earlier features.
