Description
Butterwell is a small structure located approximately 25 meters east of Alleron House, dated 1818 as noted on its lead outfall. It is constructed of rubble with a slate roof and features a gabled design built into the slope of the ground. The south side has an opening with a straight-sided pointed head. Inside, the walls are plastered, and there is a slit in the back gable along with a small square opening on each side. An internal inset tank is supplied by spring water, which overflows into a surrounding ornamental pool. There was previously a door that is now missing. At the time of the survey in July 1988, the area was quite overgrown, but the structure is considered a more elaborate version of similar features found in the South Hams area.
