Description
Colbourne House is a house dating from the mid to late 18th century, with renovations occurring around 1989. It’s constructed of exposed red brick, with an inconsistent bond tending towards Flemish bond, and features a right-end stack with a rendered brick chimneyshaft. The roof is slate-covered, with a gabled dormer.
The house has a double-depth plan, consisting of one room wide, with a left-hand doorway leading to a side passage that widens to accommodate rear stairs. The exterior is three storeys high and has a two-window front. Plat bands run across the front at floor levels. It has 12-pane sash windows on the ground and first floors, and smaller 6-pane sashes on the second floor, all with flat brick arches above. Stone steps lead from the street to a round-headed front doorway, now with a 20th-century cement surround and a low-pitched head. The doorway contains a 20th-century part-glazed door and a plain fanlight. The passage to the rear contains an original round-headed door with fielded panels and an integral fanlight with radial glazing bars. Plain eaves run along the parallel gable-ended roof.
Inside, there is an open-string geometric staircase with stick balusters. Fielded-panel doors are present throughout. The front room retains its original features, except for the chimneypiece, and includes a moulded plaster dentil cornice, fielded-panel wainscotting to the dado, cupboards with fielded-panel doors, and fielded-panel shutters. While the rest of the interior wasn’t inspected, it is likely to be of interest.
