Description
Hill House is a former vicarage that has been converted into a private house, built around 1850. It is possibly designed by J L Pearson, who also designed the nearby Church of St Matthew in 1849-50. The house is in the Tudor style, constructed from stone rubble with stone dressings and later rendering. The southwest side features later slate hanging, while the slate roof has stone-coped gables topped with small stone finials.
The building has an asymmetrical plan and elevations, with two storeys. The northeast entrance front includes a twin-gabled wing on the right, which has a stack on the larger gable and a chamfered two-centred arch doorway on the side. There is a large four-centred arch stair window in the right wing, and another stack on the corner with set-offs. The southeast front has two gables, with a stack rising from the side of the smaller gable. The slate-hung southwest side features two gables and an external stack on the left-hand side with set-offs.
The windows are stone mullion-transom types with four-centred arch lights and iron casements fitted with leaded panes. The interior retains contemporary features, including a staircase and stone chimney-pieces with depressed moulded two-centred arches. Hill House was formerly the home of Edward Hyams, a 20th-century gardener known for planting the garden.
