Description

This is an early 19th century terrace of buildings constructed in a Greek Revival style. Numbers 1 to 3 form a group, with number 2, Fore Street, constituting the northernmost bay of the terrace. The buildings are three storeys high and feature a symmetrical facade with projecting end bays at numbers 3 and number 2 Fore Street. The fenestration is arranged as 1 window wide, 7 windows wide, then 1 window wide. The building fronts are stuccoed; number 1 retains a rusticated ground floor. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and has moulded ridge stacks. The end bays have plain pilaster strips to the quoins. There are plain cornices and panelled parapets, with acroteria on the quoins of the end bays. A plain band runs along the first floor. Sill bands are present beneath the windows of the second floor. Recessed sash windows with glazing bars are used throughout. The first-floor windows are detailed with console-bracketed cornices, while those in the end bays incorporate sidelights. The ground floor window of number 3 has a segmental arch with voussoirs and sidelights. The ground floors of numbers 1 and 2 have been altered with modern shop fronts. Number 3 has a round-arched doorway featuring fluted Greek Doric quarter columns, supporting a cornice, a radial fanlight, and a panelled door. Good quality cast iron balconies with anthemion decoration are present on the first floor.
