Description
Auton is an 18th-century house, possibly with earlier origins, located set back from the road and attached to a gable on its right-hand side. The walls are rendered rubble or cob, and the roof is thatched. The building's original layout is unclear; it may have begun as two cottages. It now features a smaller room to the left of the entrance baffle, containing a corner fireplace opposite a corner staircase, and a larger room to the right, at a lower level and with a gable fireplace. The ground floor has a single four-pane sash window to the left of the entrance, two further four-pane sashes separated by a four-panel flush door set in deep reveals. The first floor has two glazing bar casements, one on the left and one on the right, and a small two-light casement with horizontal bars to the right of the door. The rear of the house includes a door at mid-height, flanked to the left by a two-light glazing bar casement, and a lean-to outhouse to the right; a 20th-century glazed conservatory porch has been added. The roof is hipped, with a large eaves stack to the front on the left, a smaller raised brick stack to the right, and some slate along the back eaves. Internally, two spiral wooden staircases remain, the one on the left built into the rock and featuring a stone bottom tread. The building is set back into the hillside, with a lean-to slate and rubble wing projecting forward on the left.
