Description

No. 22 is a house, now divided into flats, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of local stone rubble with a plastered front that is lightly treated to resemble ashlar, and it features some original pegged slate-hanging at the rear. The building has end stacks with rendered brick chimney shafts and a slate roof. The plan consists of two rooms wide and is double-depth, with an original central front door that is now blocked, replaced by 20th-century doors on the north side.

The exterior is three storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front. All windows are replacement tripartite sashes without glazing bars, except for the central ground-floor window, which is a later small sash that blocks the original front door. The building has a timber modillion eaves cornice and a gable-ended roof that runs parallel to the street. At the rear, there are 20th-century casements and extensions.

The interior was only partially inspected, focusing on the ground floor, where some original details remain, including panelled doors, a moulded plaster cornice around the former entrance hall, and an overlight with Gothick glazing bars. The stairs have been removed, but additional joinery and details are likely present on the upper floors.

The property features a courtyard to the north, which is screened from the street by a tall wall made of stucco on stone rubble and brick. This courtyard contains a segmental-headed arch and likely original double doors that are panelled on the front with good ferramenta. There is also a kitchen block at the rear with a lateral stack, which has been raised to three storeys.
