Description

16 Clarence Hill is a late 19th-century building, originally constructed as an entrance hall to Mount Galpine and now converted into a separate house. It features reused timbers from the demolished Dolphin House, with one beam dated 1629. The building is timber-framed and has a roof that is not visible.

The exterior consists of three storeys and has a single-window range. It showcases a highly ornamental tall and narrow front designed in the 17th-century style, featuring jettied upper floors and a gabled roof, incorporating some reused 17th-century carpentry. The central doorway has a moulded surround and contains a 17th-century-style oak door with patterned panels, flanked by a large overlight and sidelights with diamond panes of leaded glass. The framing is decorated with carved guilloche.

The richly-carved first-floor jetty bressummer displays the date 1629 along with the initials W.G. and G.G. The first floor features small-panel framing and a central oriel window with carved corner posts and brackets shaped like heraldic beasts. Ionic pilasters on panelled pedestals at each end support brackets carved as human figures. The second-floor jetty has a carved fascia, and the second floor is adorned with scallop-shaped tiles. Deep eaves rest on shaped brackets, and the gable is decorated with carved bargeboards. Although the rear of the building was not inspected, it is reported to include more reused 17th-century carpentry and another oriel window. The interior has not been inspected.
