Description

Grants Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century, renovated in 1886, as indicated by a date plaque. It is constructed of stone rubble with a stuccoed front, subtly designed to resemble ashlar. The rear has lateral end stacks with brick chimneyshafts topped with old pots, and a slate roof. The plan features a double-depth layout with two rooms per floor, and a winder stair within a turret located at the rear, off the left side of the passage.

The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window front of three storeys. The ground floor has a large, central doorway framed by an unusual, sturdy doorframe, now containing a part-glazed 20th-century door. Above the doorway is a shield inscribed in Lombardic script that describes the 1886 renovation. Horned four-pane sashes are positioned on either side of the doorway. The first floor windows are twelve-pane sashes, and the second floor windows have a six-over-three-pane configuration. The roof has gable ends and deep eaves with a plain soffit.

The interior retains plain joinery from the early 18th century, including two-panel doors set in solid frames.
