Description

11 and 12 Fairfax Place is a Grade II listed building located in Dartmouth, likely constructed around 1864. This structure consists of two shops that have been combined, with storerooms and living spaces above. It features plastered timber-framing and has disused stacks without visible chimney shafts, topped with a slate roof.

The building stands three storeys high and has a two-window range. The ground floor showcases an altered late 19th-century timber shop front that wraps around with two lights on each side wall. The central section is recessed, flanked by doors on either side of a single light. The right doorway is now blocked by a window, while the left doorway contains a bottom-panelled glazed door. Above, there is a two-window front with 16-pane sash windows. The timber eaves cornice has distinctive decoration, including a frieze of ball ornaments over a fluted fascia with lozenges. The roof is hipped, and the side walls maintain the same simple style, featuring some 12-pane sash windows. At the rear, there are house doorways on each side, each fitted with 20th-century doors, with the left doorway having a tall overlight with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected. This building was likely constructed around the same time as the ramp of Newcomen Road.
