Description
15 Higher Street is a house that likely dates from the early 19th century, although it may have an earlier core since it occupies a plot that dates back to medieval times. The building features mixed construction, with roughcast stone rubble and a plastered timber-framed front. It has end stacks, one rendered and one with exposed brick, both topped with old chimney pots, and a slate roof.
The house has a plan that is two rooms wide and one room deep, with a central passage leading to the rear stairs. It stands three storeys high with a cellar and has a two-window range on the first floor. The front is irregular, with the ground floor showcasing timber pilasters flanking a central round-headed doorway that contains a 20th-century part-glazed door beneath an original fanlight with radial glazing bars. There is a plain 20th-century window on either side of the door. A timber band runs at first-floor level, and the wall above it oversails the ground-floor recess. The first floor features a 19th-century horned four-pane sash window on the left, while the only other front window is a small casement located at the centre of the second floor. The right end wall includes two additional horned four-pane sash windows. The roof has a gable end and is adorned with a timber eaves cornice and a modillion frieze.
Inside, the house retains some simple 19th-century details, including a stick-baluster staircase. This building is part of a notable group of listed buildings on Higher Street, which served as the main trading street in Dartmouth during the medieval period.
