Description
The limekilns located about 40 metres east of Hazard Cottage date from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with the kiln to the west marked with the date 1789. They are constructed from slate stone rubble. The western kiln is round in shape and features a high pointed arch opening on its east side and an elliptical arch opening on its west side. The east opening bears the date 1789 and the initials I.R. carved on the jamb. The adjacent kiln to the right is semi-circular in plan and has a pointed arch opening. Connected by a high stone retaining wall is a third kiln, which is round in shape, with a segmental arched opening on the west side and a round arched opening on the east side. These kilns are positioned immediately south of Hazard quarry and are built into a bank to facilitate top loading from the rear. They are particularly notable as one is a dated example. The nearby Hazard Cottage, originally a pair of cottages, was likely built to accommodate quarrymen or lime burners and is dated 1792, making it nearly contemporary with the kilns.
