Description

Hazard Cottage is a pair of cottages that have been converted into one dwelling. It is dated 1792, with a 19th-century rear range that was extended in the 20th century. The building is constructed of slate rubble and features a rag slate roof with gabled ends. A large projecting chimney stack with set-offs is located at one gable end, while the right-hand stack is rendered. The rear range is made of rendered stone rubble and has a parallel gable-ended tiled roof.

The original layout suggests that it was a pair of single-room cottages, each heated from a gable end stack, with a pair of entrances located at the center of the front. The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window front with widely spaced small window openings that have timber lintels and slate sills. The ground floor features slate drip moulds, and 20th-century two-light casements have been inserted. There are also a pair of plain doorways at the center with 20th-century plank glazed doors, which are now enclosed within a large 20th-century glazed conservatory. The rear range has larger 20th-century casements.

Inside, there is a slate inscribed "ATR 1792" next to the fireplace at the south (left) end. The fireplace at the north (right) end has a granite lintel, and the ceiling features light scantling timber joists. A solid partition separates the two rooms, which originally divided the two cottages.

It is likely that Hazard Cottage was built to house quarrymen or lime burners working at Hazard Quarry, located immediately to the northeast, where the limekilns are also included in the heritage listing.
