Description

This is a house, originally a farmhouse, dating back to the 16th century, with an additional wing constructed around the 18th century, though local tradition suggests the wing may have been built in 1640 on its east side. The walls are of rendered stone rubble, topped with a slate roof; the west end has a gable, while the right (east) end is hipped. The rear wing has a grouted slate roof with a gabled end. Distinctive features include four early crested ridge tiles on the main roof, with some reused on the rear wing, and rendered chimney stacks. The original layout comprised three rooms and a through passage, with the lower end positioned on the right. Later lateral stacks were added to the hall and lower end, along with a truncated gable end stack serving the inner room; the stacks may be later additions. A later front porch was added to the passage doorway, and a long rear wing extends behind the hall, creating an overall "T" shape, though the wings are not at precisely right angles. A small, 20th-century outshut is located behind the main range.

The south front has a slightly cracked wall with a projection marking a change in plane. A low raking buttress is visible at the right-hand corner. The front features a four-window arrangement. Most of the windows are late 19th or 20th-century 2-light casements with glazing bars. The ground-floor window to the left of centre, and the right-hand window are 20th-century replacements. The ground-floor window on the left retains an old, hollow-chamfered frame with signs of a missing mullion. To the right of centre is a rendered stone porch with a hipped slate roof and 20th-century glazed doors. The inner doorway has an original chamfered timber doorframe with a segmental head and an old nail-studded door, complete with wrought iron hinges. The rear wing has a range of 19th and 20th-century casement windows, along with a 20th-century glazed extension, likely converted from an outbuilding.

Inside, the lower end room has a roughly chamfered ceiling beam. Plank and muntin screens are present on either side of the passage. The screen on the lower side has a scratch moulding on the muntins, a roll and hollow-moulded head beam, and two cranked head doorways, one retaining its original door. The screen on the hall side of the passage has roll mouldings on the passage side and chamfered mouldings on the hall side, with a roll-moulded, cranked head doorway and an old plank door. The hall has two ceiling beams; one is chamfered on one side only, with hollow step stops, and the other is chamfered on one side and moulded on the other. The screen between the hall and inner room has been removed, but the moulded head beam remains. The hall fireplace has an unchamfered timber lintel and stone rubble jambs. The front window of the hall has a moulded lintel. The inner room has a rounded rear corner. The main roof was entirely replaced in the 20th century, but three earlier principals remain at the front, two with holes for threaded purlins and one with a short, curved foot. The rear wing has 19th-century king-post trusses.
