Description

Westover Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the early 17th century and remodeled in the early and later 19th century. It features roughcast stone rubble with a slate roof that has gabled ends and late 19th century crested ridge tiles. There are rendered stacks at the gable end and at the rear. The house has a two-room plan, originally designed with a through passage and a kitchen to the left, which has a gable end stack, and a parlour to the right with a rear lateral stack and a stair turret at the back of the kitchen. It may have originally included a third room to the right.

In the early 19th century, the first storey and roof were raised, and the passage was widened into a stair hall. Later in the 19th century, a two-storey outshut was added at the rear of the parlour, which contains the kitchen and has a rear lateral stack. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. The 19th century windows include 16-pane sashes on the ground floor and a narrower 12-pane sash in the centre of the first floor. The central entrance features an early 19th century panelled door and a large glazed porch from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The left gable end has a large projecting stack with set offs. The former stair turret is located at the rear right, and the two-storey outshut at the rear left has a lateral stack and a late 19th century cantilevered room in the angle to the right. Inside, much of the 19th century joinery remains, including panelled doors and a staircase with a turned newel, steep balusters, and open string with strapped tread ends. The parlour to the right features an early 19th century panelled door flanked by round-headed niches with moulded architraves, and the rear lateral fireplace has been blocked by a 20th century fireplace. The kitchen on the left has an open fireplace with an oven and an ovolo moulded timber lintel that has been reset at a lower level. The roof space was not inspected, but it is unlikely to contain pre-19th century trusses.
