Description
The Ivybridge Aqueduct and the remains of the mill wheel house were built in the late 18th century or early 19th century to support a woollen mill.
The aqueduct features 12 round-headed arches aligned north to south, carrying a water channel to the wheel house of the now-demolished mill. The structure is made of coursed squared granite rubble, with red brick and some cement render. In 1896, parts of the walls and arches were rebuilt in red brick, as indicated by a cast-iron date over one arch. During this renovation, a dentil coping of rounded bricks was added, though it is incomplete. Above the arches, there are recessed panels. The west side and the north-east part of the aqueduct are rendered with cement. At the south end, the aqueduct angles to the south-west, where a narrow arch leads to a wider arch that carries the water channel over the roadway towards the wheel house.
The remains of the mill wheel house are in a ruinous state. The walls, constructed of slate random rubble with squared granite and brick dressings, are only partly intact, and iron bars have been added for support. Arched openings can still be seen in the walls. The wheelpit is currently stopped, as the wheel has been removed, and a low wall with railing surrounds the north-western part of the wheelpit.
