Description

Guildhall Cottage, built around 1897, incorporates part of the Guildhall and prison buildings from around 1624. The structure is 1½ storeys high and features three bays on the south side, along with a two-window gabled front facing Guildhall Yard on the east side. It has a Welsh slate roof and rendered masonry stacks, constructed from Devonian limestone in random rubble, with some areas rendered.

The cottage includes three gabled dormers that are slate-hung and have decorated slate barge-boards. The east bay and the gabled east return have a jettied, slate-hung first floor, supported by granite columns that were originally part of the Exchange built in 1616 and demolished in 1878. The ground floor on the south front features three-light casement windows and a segmental arched doorway with a modern door.

On the first floor of the east front, there are three-light casement windows with leaded lights. There are old doorways at the east end leading into a recessed entrance to the former prison, with oak framed doorways that have ogee mouldings. The board and batten doors are reinforced with wrought iron pegs and bars. The prison windows on the ground floor of the east return have timber surrounds, lintels, and wrought iron grills. A plaque on the first floor of the return lists benefactors and indicates the building date of 1624.
