Description
Butter Well is located approximately 13 metres south-east of Sunbeam Cottage in Buckland-Tout-Saints. This structure, likely from the 19th century, is built into a boundary wall along the road. It features a combination of rubble and dressed stone. The well has a deep square recess set into the bank, flanked by a drystone retaining wall that extends about 12 metres to the left, leading to a gateway for Ledstone Farm, and about 4 metres to the right, where the wall changes from horizontal to vertical bedding.
The opening of the well is approximately 800 millimetres wide and 1.6 metres high, extending back squarely to a depth of about 2.25 metres into the bank, over a spring water source that flows continuously through a square trough made of flat stone slabs. There is one bridging slab towards the back, while the front slab is set vertically and features a saddle-shaped recess. The opening is covered with flat stone slabs. To the left, there is an outlet leading to an overflow, which is also roofed by a series of flat slabs against the drystone wall. The entire structure is set beneath a grassed surface and is unusually well preserved.
