Description

Farm Cottages are a pair of detached cottages located in Buckland-Tout-Saints, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century. The cottages are constructed of painted rubble with a corrugated asbestos-cement roof that replaced the original thatch. They feature a symmetrical front gable and are set into a slope. The buildings are two storeys high and have two windows, which are all 20th-century replacements. The front includes a three-light casement window flanked by two-light windows on either side of a pair of 20th-century glazed doors, with the door on the right now blocked internally. This entrance is accessed by steps and is sheltered by a propped pent hood made of corrugated asbestos-cement.

Each gable has a truncated pyramidal rubble chimney stack. The left side of the building has a small casement window on the first floor, while the right side features two small lights, one of which is located under a drip-stone, and a 20th-century glazed door. The rear of the cottages has a three-light window, and the roof sweeps down over a slightly projecting stair turret at the lower end. There are some lean-to additions at the back that are not of special interest. The property also has a County insurance plaque.

Inside, there is a spiral staircase at the back right, a bressumer fireplace with cloam over, and a deep external recess that may have served as a fuel store. The cottages feature a good spine beam and early joists, although the roof is not accessible. These cottages are a notable example of modest vernacular architecture in the hamlet and retained their thatch within living memory.
