Description

Longclose Farm is a farmhouse built in 1853, part of a large Model Farm group in Buckland-Tout-Saints. The building is constructed from slatestone with slate roofs and features brick stacks that have been raised. It presents a carefully designed gabled asymmetrical composition, while the north front is symmetrical and centered on the short cross axis of the large yard.

The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic. The entrance front, facing east, includes a gable on the left with a two-light casement window on both the ground and first floors, a small sash window in the gable, and a combination of one, two, and three-light casements to the right. There is also a picturesque timber-framed porch with a scalloped open barge board, which leads to a part-glazed door with a three-pane overlight. The left side of the building is nearly identical but lacks a door and has one over two over three-light casements in the gable.

At the back, there are one and two-light casements, a two-storey flat-roofed extension, and a central gabled dormer. The farmhouse features a very large flush eaves stack, along with three additional ridge stacks made of stone, each with three unlinked brick shafts (two shafts on the north-west stack), and no cappings or pots.

The front facing the farmyard has twin gables, with a door beneath a continuous port canopy that connects to adjoining outbuildings. The first floor has two, one, and two-light casements, small sashes in the gables, and a central hipped roof. All openings are topped with flat segmental arches that have flush voussoirs. This is a grand house, designed to match the scale of the large group of farm buildings surrounding it. The date of construction is confirmed by the owner from the deeds.
