Description

Whitehouse Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse located in Ugborough. It features a slate rubble construction with a rendered front and a corrugated asbestos sheet roof with gabled ends. The layout consists of three rooms and a through passage, although the inner room at the higher right-hand end has been demolished. There is a slightly projecting lateral stack at the rear of the hall, another lateral stack on the front wall just below the through passage, and a smaller stack at the lower gable end.

On the now exposed wall at the higher end of the hall, there is a blocked fireplace with a chamfered slate lintel and a blocked doorway with a chamfered wooden lintel, which once led to the inner room. This placement of the inner room fireplace is unusual. The farmhouse has always appeared to be two storeys high and features a five-window range, with 19th-century casements and sashes. The lower end windows on the left have stone dripmoulds, and the right-hand ground floor hall window is a tripartite sash.

Inside, there is a tall plank and muntin screen separating the hall from the through passage. The hall boasts a high ceiling with moulded main beams that have hollow and two ogee moulds, without steps. The joists in the hall have ovolo and two hollows with bar steps, and the joists in the through passage are similar to those in the hall. Only the roof over the lower end has been inspected, revealing principals with halved lap-jointed collars and threaded or trenched purlins.
