Description
The Post Office is a building located on Fore Street in Totnes, dating from the 1920s. It is constructed of brick with slate-hung main elevations and features gabled slate roofs with a rendered end stack. The building has two storeys and a one-window front, with a central gable above a two-storey bay window that contains 6/6-pane sashes and outer 4/4-pane sashes. There is a slate projection over a tripartite shop front, which is framed by pilasters and includes a central doorway with a fanlight and multi-pane shop windows with glazing bars. The right-hand return continues with similar detailing and irregular fenestration, including a lower two-storey projection with a half-hipped roof. A bracketed canopy is present over the entrance to a simpler one-storey rear sorting office. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a good example of a Vernacular Revival style, using traditional materials and designed to blend in with the historic character of the street.
