Description

Kingsbridge Inn, located at No. 9 Leechwell Street, is reputedly the oldest inn in Totnes, dating from around 1684. The building was refronted in the early 19th century and features two storeys with one window. It has a Welsh slate roof with a gabled front and old, rendered masonry stacks. The front is timber-framed and plastered, with a jettied first floor. The party walls are made of limestone rubble, and there is a slate-hung return on the west side.

The front of the inn includes architraved sash windows with glazing bars and shutters, while the ground floor window has sidelights. There is a recessed doorway with an original chamfered frame and a boarded door that has moulded cover-strip panels and wrought iron hinges. On the west side, leading to the kitchen, there is a four-light mullioned window with splayed mouldings and 19th-century casements.

Inside, the building features chamfered ceiling beams and sections of muntin and plank partitions. The former kitchen includes an original wide masonry fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel, which has the scratched graffito "C II R". The rear first-floor room, which was the principal chamber, has a plaster panel over the fireplace inscribed with "1684" in a rosette bordered panel, flanked by foliated drops.
