Description
A pair of terraced houses dating from around 1830-40. The houses are built of painted stucco over stone rubble with slate roofs and stacks at each end. They each have two rooms deep and a single room width, with parallel adjoining corridor halls. The houses are two storeys high, with number 1 also having an attic. They have a symmetrical four-window front. The ground floor has four-paned French windows with margin glazing bars, and a gabled dormer to number 1. The ground floor also features six-panelled doors with overlights; the door to the left is recessed behind a panelled doorcase, while the door to the right projects forward in line with the facade. First-floor windows are large hornless sashes with 16 panes, each fitted with horizontal sliding timber shutters. A prominent two-storey balcony extends across the front, featuring a tent-shaped slate roof with a dentilled cornice, supported by four turned timber posts. The upper storey of the balcony has three intermediate shorter turned balusters and three sections of wrought iron railings between each, featuring intersecting ogee and round-arched heads and quatrefoils in the top and bottom rails. The ground floor railings have vertically square-sectioned supports. Inside number 1, the lobby has an inner door with a semi-circular headed surround and a two-panelled door with a glazed upper half containing four panes and margin bars. The interiors of the other house were not inspected.
