Description
Bryher House is a terraced house built around 1830-1840, located on Victoria Terrace in Instow. The building features painted stucco and a slate roof with lion's head guttering, along with stacks at each end. It is double-fronted and two rooms deep, with a central hall that has a rear staircase set slightly to the left. The house is two storeys tall with a basement and has a symmetrical three-window range. There is a plat band, and each side has a 16-paned sash window above replaced 2-paned sashes, flanking a central doorway that features a four-panelled door with an overlight. A flight of slate-capped steps leads to the doorway, which is flanked by decorative wrought iron railings with a wreathed handrail. The principal window openings have horizontal sliding louvred timber sashes. Inside, there is an inner lobby door with a two-panelled base, the upper half being glazed with four panes and margin bars. The 19th-century joinery is mostly intact, and there are moulded plasterwork cornices in the hall and principal rooms. The staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed handrail. Bryher House is part of Victoria Terrace, alongside Pilton Cottage, No. 2 Victoria Terrace, and Orchard House.
