Description

Pilton Cottage and No. 2 Victoria Terrace are two adjoining terraced houses built around 1830-1840. They are constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof, featuring a gable end at the left. The roof has lion's head guttering, a brick ridge stack, and a stack at the left end with Peters marland clay pots. The terrace is two rooms deep, with Pilton Cottage being a single room wide and having a staircase hall to the right. No. 2 Victoria Terrace is double-fronted with a central staircase plan.

Both houses are two storeys tall, with an attic storey in Pilton Cottage. The terrace features a plat-band with Ionic pilasters at the left end of Pilton Cottage and the right end of No. 2. The overall arrangement includes five window openings. Pilton Cottage has sash windows on the left side on each floor, although the glazing bars have been removed from the lower sash. It also has a 12-paned sash window to the right above a 6-panelled door with a fanlight. No. 2 has a symmetrical facade with two 16-paned sashes on each floor, flanking a 12-paned sash above a semi-circular headed doorway that features a 6-panelled door and decorative ironwork fanlight. All window openings are fitted with horizontal sliding louvred timber shutters.

Inside, No. 2 has a round-arched lobby inner door surround and a door with a 2-panelled base, where the upper half is glazed with four panes and margin bars. The 19th-century joinery is entirely intact, including 6-panelled doors and panelled internal window shutters. The central staircase features a moulded handrail that ramps up to slender turned newels, stick balusters, and a moulded string. Moulded plasterwork cornices can be found in the principal rooms and hall. The interior of Pilton Cottage has not been inspected but is said to retain similar features. Together, these two houses are part of a terrace that includes Bryher House and Orchard House.
