Description

Galsworthy House is a circa 1830-40 terraced house located in Instow. The exterior is painted rendered stone rubble with a slate roof and a brick ridge stack. The house is double-fronted and two storeys high, with a central hall and originally two rooms deep. The rooms to the right have been altered to create a larger living space, with the staircase positioned slightly to the left behind the hall. The front elevation features a three-window range with symmetrical detailing and flanking pilasters. Most windows are hornless sashes with 16 panes, except for the central window above the doorway, which has 12 panes. The front door is a six-panelled design with a fanlight. Iron railings with spear-headed shafts run along the front garden. Inside, the inner lobby door has a two-panelled base and glazed upper half with 12 panes. Moulded plasterwork cornices are present in the hall and main rooms. Original 19th-century joinery remains, including panelled window shutters. The staircase has stick balusters, a moulded handrail with ramped newels and string, and a rear window with 18 panes. The house is part of a terrace that also includes Torridge View.
