Description

Quay Cottages comprises two adjoining cottages, likely dating from the late 17th century, with possible earlier fabric incorporated within. The cottages are constructed of rendered cob and stone, with a scantle slate roof. The roof is hipped at the rear of number 2 and has a gable end with a stone rubble stack at the rear of number 1. There is also an axial brick stack and two lateral stacks on the left side of number 1. The cottages are arranged in a U-shaped plan, connecting over a shared open passage leading to a rear courtyard. Number 1 has two 19th-century two-light casement windows with six panes per light on the upper floor, and a three-light casement with six panes per light to the left of a 20th-century door on the ground floor. Number 2, to the right of the passage, features two two-light casement windows with four panes per light on the upper floor, and a two-light casement with eight panes per light to the left of a plank door on the ground floor. The interior of number 2 includes late 17th/early 18th-century moulded plasterwork cornices in the principal room and a moulded plaster roundel in the principal bedroom above the stairs. The interior of number 1 has not been inspected. These features contribute to the group value of the cottages.
