Description

This is a group of seven headstones located approximately 1 metre south of Brayford Baptist Church, dating from the early 19th century. They are made of slate. One headstone belongs to William Crocker, who died in 1840, and features scalloped decoration at the corners. Another is for Jabez Lyle, who died in 1829, with the inscription, "If God be pleased and his glorified Creatures be pleased who are we that we should be displeased." Edward Wedlake, who also died in 1829, is commemorated with the note that he "was sent forth to preach the gospel by the church in this place." Other headstones include those of Mary Winzer (died 1830), Jane Cutcliffe (died 1836), and William Cutcliffe (died 1847), all by Philip Pile of Bratton. Mary Gould, who died in 1826, is remembered with the inscription, "she was one of the first in this part of the Kingdom who followed the Primitive Christians in the Ordinance of Believers Baptism." Lastly, Joseph Gould, who died in 1817, is noted for being "a man of piety, given to hospitality, a lover of the poor; but, above all, a promoter of vital Christianity." This stone was reportedly ejected from Charles parish churchyard and remains buried here. The information is referenced in D Thompson's "A Book of Remembrance: Baptist Churches in North Devon," published in 1885.
