Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church that likely has 15th-century fabric in its chancel, nave, and tower. The tower was largely rebuilt in 1620, and the entire structure underwent significant restoration in 1885. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs. The church includes a west tower, nave, chancel, and a south porch.

The west tower has two stages and is unbuttressed, topped with an embattled parapet. Each face of the tower has a single light bell-opening, and there is a rectangular stair turret on the north side. The nave and chancel have 19th-century fenestration, with the south side of the nave featuring one two-light and one three-light pointed arched window, while the chancel has a single light window. The east end of the chancel has a three-light stepped lancet window, and there are two two-light windows on the north side of the nave.

The south porch contains a nearly semi-circular headed doorway from the 15th century, which has a hollow-chamfered and roll-moulded surround. Inside, the nave has plain ceiled waggon roofs with moulded ribs, and the chancel features a similar roof with variously carved bosses at the intersections. The nave has 20th-century seating and furniture. A font from 1727, with a fluted bowl on a baluster shaft, is present, along with a 17th-century wall monument on the north wall of the chancel dedicated to members of the Gregorie family, including George Gregorie, rector and patron of the parish who died in 1719. This monument features a broken pediment with reclining cherubs and an achievement, with skulls flanking an oval medallion at the base.
