Description

Mockham Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, although earlier fabric may be hidden within. It was remodeled in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of unrendered stone rubble and features a slate roof that is half-hipped at the right end and hipped at the left end. There is a tall stone rubble stack at the left end with a tapered cap, a heightened brick shaft, an axial brick stack, and a rendered stack at the gable end of the rear kitchen wing. The overall plan is L-shaped, with a kitchen wing at the rear of the hall on the left side, which has a through-passage containing a staircase and a parlour, with a dairy beyond to the right that was originally an outbuilding.

The farmhouse has two storeys and a six-window range. Most of the windows are from the 19th century, including a two-light casement at the left end, followed by three three-light casements, all with two panes per light, and two three-light casements at the lower end, each with three panes per light. On the ground floor, there is a two-light casement at the left end and a three-light casement, both with three panes per light, to the left of a stone rubble porch that has a plank door and a slated gabled roof. To the right, there is a three-light casement with seven panes per light and a two-light dairy window at the right end. A small heraldic shield is located on the upper storey to the left of a shield depicting three tuns and the date 1?77, with the second number obscured. The 19th-century fenestration is also preserved in the rear kitchen wing and at the back of the main range.

Inside, only the ground floor was inspected, revealing that much of the 19th-century joinery and fittings remain largely intact and unspoilt. There are two roughly chamfered cross beams in the hall ceiling and 19th-century chimneypieces in both the hall and parlour. The roof space was not accessible during the survey. Mockham was farmed in the early 19th century by the Gould family, who were the founders of the Baptist Church at Brayford.
