Description
The stable block immediately west of Grilstone was built in 1834 for William Thorne, possibly designed by J. Cock of South Molton. It is constructed of stone rubble and has a rendered front with a bitumen-painted hipped slate roof. The building has a small rectangular plan and features external stone steps leading up to the first floor at the rear, along with a likely later two-storey lean-to on the right side.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that includes a wide doorway on the left, featuring paired timber doors with a keyblock, which has likely been enlarged. To the right is a smaller 19th or 20th-century plank door. The first floor has a three-light transomed window with a segmental arched head and keyblock. The rear elevation, facing the farmyard, also has external stone steps leading up to a loft door. Although referred to as a stable, it may have served other purposes. The building has group value with Grilstone and the farm buildings to the north.
