Description

There are two sets of gravestones at the head and feet of the graves of Elizabeth and Peter Mugridge, located approximately 5 metres south of the south porch of the Church of St Michael. These gravestones date from 1773 and are made of slate. The graves are placed side by side, with Elizabeth's grave to the south of Peter's.

The headstone for Peter Mugridge reads, "Peter Mugridge of Fremington died 1773." Elizabeth's headstone features an incised angel's bust and notes her death in the same year at the age of 82. The footstones of each grave have shaped heads with carved crossed bones surrounded by foliage. Peter's inscription states: "Here you see I am gone before/Before with me you must/When you have run'd out natures race/Be turned into dust." Elizabeth's inscription reads: "My husband dear/He whent before/One week I could not stay/For unto me pale death was sent/And cal'd me then away."
