Description

The Old Parsonage is a former rectory, now a private dwelling, dating from the late 18th century with 19th century alterations. It is constructed of stone rubble with a rendered facade and features brick dressings. The roof is slate and hipped at the right end, with brick stacks at each end and on the rear wing. The building has a symmetrical central hall and staircase plan, with a principal room on each side and a kitchen/servant wing at the rear right side, forming an L-shape. A single-storey workshop, which was formerly a washhouse and coal-sheds, completes a four-sided rear courtyard plan. The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. The windows are 19th and 20th century two-light casements with six panes per light, set beneath slightly cambered brick arches. There is a single 16-paned horned sash window next to a stone rubble porch with a slate lean-to roof, and a 20th century inner door.

Inside, some early joinery remains, including four-panelled fielded panel doors in the principal rooms with original hinges, integral cupboards beside the principal fireplace in the east room, and old ledged plank doors to the bedrooms. The dairy and cellar fittings are partly intact. The late 18th century roof structure consists of four trusses in the front range and a single truss in the rear wing, featuring side-pegged collars.
