Description
This building is a shippon located approximately 15 metres southwest of Copphall Farmhouse. It dates from the 18th century, with some parts possibly rebuilt in the early 19th century. The structure is made of coursed stone rubble, featuring a cob end wall to the north and a corrugated-iron roof that is gable-ended to the south and half-hipped to the north.
The shippon has a ground floor with a loft above, situated on the west side of the farmyard at Copphall, adjacent to the entrance of the farmyard. There is likely a former lean-to kennel added to the left of the front (east side).
On the farmyard side, there is a central loft opening and two ground-floor boarded stable-type doors with wooden lintels. Projecting stones at the centre form steps leading up to the loft opening, and there is a lean-to addition on the left.
Inside, the shippon features cross beams that support the loft, with one beam displaying a rough chamfer. The roof consists of four bays with tie-beam principal-rafter trusses.
