Description
The lych gate, built around 1880, is located approximately 20 metres south of the south porch of the Church of St Mary in Atherington. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a gabled tiled roof. The structure has a rectangular plan with gates at the front. The ashlar side walls are divided internally into two bays, with stone seats on each side in the inner bay. There are three crown-post trusses, with the end trusses featuring three trefoil-headed timber openings in each gablet. These trusses are supported by inner wall plates with ogee bracing and outer wall plates held up by short timber arcading consisting of four bays, which have ogee cusped heads and tracery of trefoil-headed lights. A low central stone slab divides the walkway. The double gates at the front have turned spindles in the upper sections and a plank lower section with bracing and large iron strap hinges.
