Description
The Atherington War Memorial Cross is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building, and it overlooks the road through the village. Made of granite, the memorial takes the form of a tall cross with a Maltese cross head and a tapering cross shaft. The cross shaft rises from a square plinth that stands on a low step. The front face of the cross features a further cross shape carved in low relief, and the cross shaft has a sword carved in relief, with the hilt facing downwards, which is unusual.
At the foot of the cross shaft, there is a principal dedicatory inscription that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those who fell in the First World War are recorded on the front face of the plinth, indicating four names and mentioning "AND THREE BROTHERS" with three additional names. The names of those who served in the Second World War are inscribed in a recessed panel on one side of the plinth, noting the years 1939 – 1945 and listing two names.
