Description

Marwood House is a large house built around 1820. It is constructed of stucco and features a hipped slate roof with two axial brick stacks that are barely visible behind a parapet with stone copings. The house has two storeys with an attic storey at the front and three storeys at the rear, presenting a symmetrical square plan.

The front facade has three bays of tripartite windows, each with timber side-sashes. The side sashes have four panes each, while the upper sashes have six panes with glazing bars above a plain plat-band. All the sashes are likely original. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows on each side of a central bay that slightly breaks back. The central porch is supported by Doric columns and features a triangular pediment, a frieze, and a leaded roof. Doric pilasters flank a half-glazed nine-panel door, which is accompanied by three-panel sidelights.

Above, there is a deep moulded cornice with a parapet, and three dormers with hipped slate roofs that are visibly thrown forward. Inside, the entrance hall has a large round arch with a modillion cornice. To the left, there is a marble chimneypiece with fluted pilasters, wreaths, and a human head with festoons between them. The ornamental stairway features a wreathed handrail and stick balusters, illuminated by a large round-arched stair window at the rear. The first floor was not inspected.
