Description

Marwood Methodist Chapel is a Methodist chapel built in 1872 by Alexander Lauder of Barnstaple. It features polychromatic stone with freestone dressings and a banded slate roof with coped gables and crested ridge tiles. The chapel is designed in the Victorian Gothic style and has an auditorium with two-bay north and south transepts that include galleries. There are polygonal stair towers at the western angles of the transepts, and porches on the north and south sides of these stair towers. A Sunday school extension was added to the east end in 1975.

The exterior of the west gable end of the auditorium showcases a large 4-light Geometric tracery window, diagonal buttresses, and two cusped lancets on the north and south sides. The twin gabled transepts to the east feature two cusped lancets each, with Geometric traceried windows above. The squat polygonal stair towers to the west have broaches, lancets, and hipped roofs, while the gabled porches on the north and south sides of the stair towers have pointed arches and diagonal buttresses. The east end includes a pointed arch window in the gable and the large brick Sunday school extension.

Inside, the chapel retains its original pews and features an arcaded rostrum with colonnettes and a communion rail. The transepts each have two chamfered pointed arches that contain galleries with wrought-iron fronts. The stairs leading to the galleries have panelled balustrades and stop-chamfered newels with finials, and the chapel boasts open timber roofs.
