Description

The Newton chest tomb, located approximately 3 metres south of the south-west corner of the south porch of the Church of St. Peter ad Vincula in Combe Martin, is a mid-19th century chest tomb. It features a brick plinth topped with a slate slab, and has an anthemion motif at the top corners. The tomb bears an inscription dedicated to Mary Newton of the Kings Arms Hotel in Combe Martin, who died in Tavistock in 1844 while seeking a change of air, as well as to other members of her family.
