Description

A railway signal box, dating from 1861. It was constructed of stone rubble with a weatherboarded upper storey and has a hipped slate roof. A lateral brick stack is present at the rear, with offsets. The building is rectangular and two storeys high. The upper storey features twin 16-paned horizontal sliding sash windows to the front, a 12-paned horizontal sliding sash window at the right end, two 6-paned windows to the rear, and an external wooden staircase leading to a first-floor doorway at the left end, with a 4-panelled, glazed door. A planked door is located on the ground floor. Much of the original machinery remains, including a frame fitted with 16 levers by Stevens and Co. The signal box was closed in 1979. It was built for the Bideford Extension Railway, which opened in 1855, and later served the London and South Western Railway.
