Description
Two cottages, located at the north end of Lester House, are likely from the early 17th century and were unoccupied at the time of the survey. They are built of unrendered stone rubble with some cob and feature a thatched roof. There is a stone rubble stack at the left gable end with a drip and an axial stone rubble stack. The cottages probably originated as one house with a two-room plan and a through-passage, which is now blocked off to create a lobby entry to the left-hand cottage. An outbuilding at the right end is partially lofted and was used as a coal shed.
The cottages are two storeys high and have a four-window range. The windows include 19th and 20th century two-light casements with six panes per light at each end, four panes per light to the center left, and two panes per light to the center right. There is an eight-paned sash window to the left and a sixteen-paned sash window to the right, both accompanied by two small lean-to timber porches with corrugated roofs. A plank door is located at the right end.
Inside the left-hand cottage, there are impressive wide chamfered cross ceiling beams, which were partially collapsed at the time of the survey in August 1985. A plank and muntin screen separates the two cottages, featuring unusually deep chamfered muntins that are virtually diamond-shaped in section. The roof space was not inspected. Additionally, there is a small timber splayed mullion window concealed to the right of the plank door by the outbuilding at the right end.
