Description
This is a late 19th-century house, likely a remodelling of an earlier building, situated on Pilton Street in Barnstaple. It was originally a single house but has since been divided into two separate units, numbered 49 and 49A. The exterior is roughcast, with a natural slate roof. It features a rear right lateral stack, a stack at the right end, and an axial stack to the left of the centre, all with brick shafts. The house has a single-depth design. The right-hand unit (No.49) has a central front entrance, while the left-hand unit is one room wide. The house sits elevated above the street.
The facade has two storeys and an asymmetrical but regularly glazed four-window arrangement. There are recessed front doors in the left-hand bay and the second bay from the left. The windows are horned sashes with two on the ground floor and four on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected, but potentially retains features of interest, and further inspection may refine the dating. Cast-iron terrace railings, dating to the 1860s and of decorative design, are included as subsidiary features.
