Description
The railings, lamp, and gates located to the north of the churchyard path at St Mary's Churchyard in Barnstaple date from the late 19th century to early 20th century. Constructed from stone rubble and cast iron, the railings enclose the churchyard on the south side of the Parish Church of St Mary, providing access through a gateway to the porch and another to the eastern doorway in the south wall. They also face the path that runs behind Feoffees Cottages.
The structure features low stone rubble plinth walls that are capped with brick. The railings consist of square-section verticals topped with simple spike finials and supported by S-shaped brackets. The gates are designed with double rails in the middle and simplified acorn finials. A lamp, which illuminates the south porch, is affixed to the plinth and supported by fine wrought-iron brackets leading to the stem and ladder rest, topped with a pyramidal lampholder. This structure is included for its group value.
