Description
The barn and cow-house, located 50 metres east of Westcott Barton, dates from the early 17th century and is constructed from coursed dressed stone with a pantiled roof. It likely started as a barn and stables. The building features two buttresses with weathering and a moulded plinth at the lower end. A string course runs around part of the front, with putlog holes beneath it. There are two ventilators in the gable. Each side of the cart entrance has a niche, with a timber lintel and a tiled porch supported by timber brackets. At the right-hand end, there is a door and a square opening, both with timber lintels. Inside, stop-chamfered beams support a hay loft. The roof is continuous over both sections and consists of seven bays with six trusses. The principals have curved feet that rest on short wooden plates on wallplate collars, with two tiers of threaded-through purlins, and the original rafters are intact.
