Description
The gravestone to Edward Capern, who died in 1894, is located approximately 12 metres south of the east end of Heanton Punchardon Church. The stone features a triangulated head with short projecting arms that are curved on the underside. It bears an inscription dedicated to Edward Capern, known as the Postman Poet, who was born in Tiverton in 1819 and died in Braunton in 1894. The inscription includes a verse by Alfred Austin, the Poet Laureate. The gravestone also commemorates Jane Capern, the wife of Edward, who also died in 1894, with a verse by Capern that reads: "I'd be remembered for some word I said Some thought immortal, winged with passing breath; But more for one true tender-hearted deed Since such sweet things the world doth sorely need." Above the inscription, there is a small recess with a cusped head that contains Capern's postman's bell made of metal with a wooden handle, although it is missing its clapper.
