8/187 Gravestone to Edward Capern, - approximately 12 metres south of East End of Heanton Punchardon Church GV II
Gravestone to Edward Capern, died 1894. Stone, triangulated head with short projecting arms, curved on the underside. Inscription to Edward Capern. The Postman Poet (born Tiverton 1819, died Braunton 1894) with verse by Alfred Austin, the Poet Laureate. Also to Jane Capern, wife of Edward (died 1894) with verse by Capern: "I'd be remembered for some word I said Some thought immortal, winged with passing breath; But more for one true tender-hearted deed Since such sweet things the world doth sorely need." Above inscription is a small recess with cusped head containing Capern's postman's bell of metal with wooden handle, but no clapper.
