Description

Phoenix House and the adjoining cottage to the east are a house and cottage with origins in the 17th century, which have been somewhat altered and rearranged in the 18th and 19th centuries. They are constructed of plastered stone rubble, possibly with some cob, and feature stone rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, all under a slate roof.

The building has a long block plan along Fore Street, facing north, with the majority occupied by Phoenix House, which has a three-room layout. The right end room has a gable-end stack facing South Street and may be an extension from the 18th or 19th century. The center room has an axial stack backing onto the right end room, while the left room features a front lateral stack. The adjoining cottage at the left end is one room wide and two rooms deep, with an axial stack backing onto Phoenix House. This cottage has undergone many alterations, and its development could not be fully determined during the survey due to inaccessibility. Both buildings are two storeys high.

The exterior displays an irregular five-window front with 19th and 20th-century replacement casements and glazing doors. Both houses have plain plank doors. The left side of the roof abuts the adjoining building, while the right side is gable-ended with late 19th-century shaped barge boards.

Inside, the visible carpentry details are plain, with the only clearly dateable feature being an early 17th-century oak doorframe between the center and right rooms of Phoenix House, which has a chamfered surround with step stops. The roof space is inaccessible, and the trusses appear to be boxed into the partitions.

Phoenix House and the adjoining cottage are part of a group of listed buildings located in the center of Holcombe Rogus.
